What to Expect at Your Lip Filler Appointment in Delaware

You did it. You booked your lip filler appointment. (You may not see it, but mint-colored confetti is fluttering around our office because we can’t wait to see you.) You are so ready to enhance those already-gorgeous lips. You’re excited, but... also a little nervous? Since this is your first lip filler, you may not know how to prepare or what to expect from your appointment. But we’ve got you!

How to prepare for your appointment

First, consult your calendar, and make sure you don’t have any dental work for at least two weeks before or after your appointment. And since we’re talking about scheduling, we also advise that you plan any major events around your appointment. You’ll want to give yourself at least a month after your appointment to heal up and be camera-ready, as it takes four weeks to fully settle.

A week before your appointment, you will want to avoid any blood thinning over-the-counter medications, such as Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, and Aleve. And, as tempting as it may be, do not do any hair removal on the area that is going to be treated. This means no waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or using hair removal cream on your upper lip. These precautions will help prevent any complications and shorten your healing time.

On the day-of, come to your appointment makeup-free. And if you’re coming straight from work or hate leaving the house with a bare face, bring some makeup wipes in your bag.

During your appointment

Your appointment should take approximately 45-60 minutes total. However, you’ll want to arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to give us time to take the “before” pictures of the super satisfying “before and after’s” of your lips, clean the lip area, and apply a topical numbing cream or dental block. For most people, this is very effective for pain management. However, you might feel a slight sting or some pressure during the filler injection.

During your appointment, we’ll determine which type of filler should be used, based on your unique lip anatomy and goals.

Some patients are prone to bleeding, especially if they’ve been taking any of those over-the-counter blood thinners we mentioned earlier, so some will typically see small “pinpoints of bleeding” at the injection sites. If you are prone to cold sores, let us know! You will likely be prescribed a preventative medication to help prevent a break out.

Post care

Be mindful that bruising and swelling are common. Typically, swelling will become more prominent that evening or the next day and last for about 1-2 days. Ice the lip area and take an antihistamine like Claritin.

You may have a small bump around the injection site — don’t rub this. Avoid itching or massaging around the injection site all together. Lumps and bumps can happen as the product settles into the tissue. They should resolve on their own, but if you’re noticing any after 4 weeks, contact your provider and they can correct it.

Until the swelling and redness resolve, avoid intense heat to the lip area, such as sunbathing, tanning, saunas, or hot wax. You will also want to avoid straws for 2 weeks to limit the lip pursing movement.

Now that we’ve covered what you can’t do after your appointment, let’s get to the can’s: Two days after your appointment, you are free to wear lip gloss or lipstick, and you can use sunscreen and makeup as usual at that time as well.

When washing, it’s business as usual. No need to use a special cleanser.

Getting any procedure done for the first time can be nerve-wracking, but as long as you prepare correctly, know what to expect on your appointment day, and take the right steps to heal, you will be able to flaunt your gorgeous lips. . And if you’re still feeling a little uneasy, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help you feel confident about your lips and your important medical aesthetic decisions.
