What is Ultrasound skin tightening and why do celebrities and influencers buzz about it?
Today, we will be explaining the nonsurgical, popular skin tightening procedure Ultherapy® and the FAQs behind it.
What is Ultherapy®?
Ultherapy® is a non-surgical face and neck treatment developed by Ulthera, Inc that delivers ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production below the skin’s surface that helps tighten and lift the skin. The device uses ultrasound technology to lift and tone loose or sagging skin without any significant downtime.
It is the only FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment, with the ability to stimulate production of your body’s own collagen and elastin from deep within the skin's layers. This state-of-the-art medical aesthetics procedure delivers ultrasound energy precisely to the areas where it will benefit you most for natural looking results without surgery.
The procedure non-invasively lifts common areas of concern including the lower face, neck, chin and brow.; improving lines and wrinkles on the upper chest. Can also be used to help with upper arm. Most patients can even see results in as little as a single treatment.
What areas can Ultherapy® treat?
Areas that can be treated by Ultherapy® includes:
- Upper face, including under eyes, crow’s feet and eyebrows). Brow lifts also.
- Lower face, including jowl and jawline
- Vertical lip lines (lipstick lines, smoker’s lines)
What are the benefits of Ultherapy® treatment?
Ultherapy® treatment results in the lifting and lightening of loose skin over time, without any downtime. Some of the other benefits include:
Natural looking results
Results visible after the first treatment for most patients
Non-invasive, requiring no recovery time
Restores and rejuvenates collagen
Reduces wrinkles and fine lines
Safe and FDA approved
What makes Ultherapy® different from other treatments?
Ultherapy® is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that delivers focused ultrasound energy to the skin to stimulate collagen production below the skin’s surface. It is the only procedure that uses ultrasound imaging to specifically allow treatment providers to see the patient’s layers of tissue and deliver treatment to where it will be most beneficial. Since the energy is deposited precisely to where it is needed, the treatment leads to visible skin tightening results after the first treatment for most patients.
Ultherapy® sets the bar for nonsurgical skin lifting according to an expert panel of physician and is the only FDA-cleared non-invasive treatment to lift skin.
It is a one-time treatment for most patients and takes about 30-90 minutes, depending on the area being treated. There is no downtime afterward.
How is Ultherapy® different from laser treatments?
Laser treatments typically only treat superficial skin for example, wrinkles, pigment changes, fine lines. Some lasers rely on light energy and cannot reach deeper skin layers. Ultherapy®, on the contrary, relies on ultrasound energy and its distinctive properties allow visualizing through the layers of skin, with the ability to treat depths that are not matched by any other non-invasive cosmetic technology.
Also, unlike Ultherapy®, laser treatments are not FDA-cleared to lift skin.
The newer devices like we have at Mint & Needle have the ability to visualize the tissue and be precise. These changes in the machine have resulted in a much more comfortable and improved procedure.
Ultherapy® technology versus traditional surgical facelift
If you are wondering if Ultherapy® can replace a traditional surgical facelift? The answer to this question is no, it doesn’t.
Ultherapy® cannot replace the traditional surgical facelift. It is a good alternative for those who have skin concerns but are not yet ready for surgery or are looking for extended effects of a non-invasive option.
How long will results last?
Ultherapy® stimulates production of new collagen below your skin’s surface. The longevity of results depends on each patient’s own collagen production and varies for each individual patient. Each patient’s natural aging process actually influences the time it takes for the new collagen being produced on the inside to translate into visible results on the outside.
How will I feel when getting the treatment? Does it hurt?
Most patients do report some discomfort during the treatment. However, we have pronox if needed and recommend taking ibuprofen before your appointment. You may only feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths during the treatment. However, comfort level will vary from person to person. The sensation only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered.
How much does it cost?
The cost for an Ultherapy® treatment can vary. It will depend on the areas that are being treated, your geographic location and the practice that you are getting the treatment from. It is best to consult your treatment professional to discuss your skin concerns and treatment cost.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients only need a single treatment; however, some may benefit by having more than one treatment. It depends on your skin laxity and how your body responds to the ultrasound and the collagen production process.
Who is an ideal candidate for Ultherapy® treatment?
An ideal candidate for Ultherapy® has mild to moderate skin laxity. Other signs of an ideal candidate include:
Loose skin under the neck and under the chin
Lines and wrinkles on the chest
An ideal candidate is typically in their 30s or older.
Do I need to take time off from work for the treatment?
There is no downtime with Ultherapy®. You can apply makeup and get back to your usual routine immediately with no lasting discomfort or special instructions.
Is the treatment safe?
Ultherapy® is a proven treatment that is FDA cleared and safe to use. Over 1.5 million treatments have been performed globally to date. Plus, ultrasound energy has a proven record and has been in use in the field of medicine for more than 50 years.
What about side effects?
Right after the treatment, your skin might experience mild redness. The redness typically resolves within a few hours. Some patients may experience mild tingling, slight swelling or tenderness to the touch. But these are also temporary. Other less common post treatment effects include temporary numbness on small areas of skin and/or bruising.
