How young is too young... for Botox?

Can you start Botox too early? Honestly, no!

When Mint and Needle founder Brandi Gregge was in her 20s, many of her clients were unsure when it was “socially acceptable” and safe to start Botox.

As far as the “socially acceptable” piece, as she still tells her clients: who cares! You deserve to feel and look your best because you want to—not because of what anyone else thinks.

As for safety, Botox is very safe in the right hands. As long as it is administered by an experienced medical professional, there are no long term effects and minimal risks of complications.

The main reason Brandi sees people wait a bit for Botox is more about when it makes financial sense. If you’re in your early 20s or just getting started out of school, you may want to worry about other expenses for a while.

But as soon as those crow’s feet start winking from the corners of our eyes, Botox can be our best friend.

Where did these wrinkles even come from?

Wrinkles are created by repetitive folding of skin from regular facial expressions such as smiling and frowning. After about 25 years of laughs, questioningly raised eyebrows, and squinting stares, you’ll start to see lines appear on your face, especially near the eyes and forehead.

If you’d like to prevent excess wrinkles, that’s a job for your late 20s, 30s, and 40s. By the time we reach our 40s, 50s, and 60s—when most people come in for Botox—those lines are already deeply etched into our skin.

How does Botox work?

Botox inhibits muscles from contracting. When injected into a facial muscle under skin that is starting to wrinkle, it prevents that muscle from causing further lines.

So when you start using Botox before the formation of wrinkles, you can prevent them from occurring in the first place! And you’ll use much smaller doses than you would in 20 or 30 years without preventative care.

And rest assured: no, does not mean you will have a “frozen” face. When Botox is administered correctly, the result looks natural: all the right muscles are still able to create your best smile or most endearing puppy dog pout.
