Every once in a while, we end up with the kind of scrape that needs a long healing process. This might be a stitched wound after an accident or even a clean cut from a surgery. Many times our skin will heal well on its own, but with most significant cuts, there is always a chance we’ll be left with a scar!

At Mint & Needle, we’ve seen plenty of patients who are either considering a surgery that could involve scarring or wishing they could smooth over an existing scar. That’s why we’ve partnered with Silagen—a game-changer for scar treatment!

What is Silagen?

Silagen is a scar treatment gel that prevents or improves the appearance of raised or discolored scars.

Whether your scar is from an injury that occurred months or years ago, or whether you’re about to undergo a surgery or procedure, Silagen will help your wound heal in a way that matches the smoothness and color of the surrounding skin.

In general, it is most effective when applied just after a wound has closed, but it has been shown to improve the appearance of red or raised scars that have been around for a while as well.

How does it work?

To talk about how Silagen works, we first need to understand how scars form in the first place. Scars are made of excess collagen that builds up on the surface of the skin. This buildup occurs because part of the skin’s healing process involves allowing more water than usual to escape through its top layer. This evaporation is known as excessive Trans-Epidermal Water Loss or TEWL. TEWL may last as long as a year for some wounds.

This excessive loss of water signals certain molecules in the epidermis, like cytokines and fibroblasts, to ultimately produce tons of collagen. We do need a certain amount of collagen for the wound to heal, but a bumpy scar appears when the body produces too much of it. (Too much of a good thing? Who knew?)

Silagen applies silicone to your skin, which reduces TEWL and therefore decreases the signals your body is sending to the molecules that produce collagen. So instead of ending up with a raised scar, Silagen helps the surface of the skin remain smooth while the deeper layers still get the collagen they need.

If you are about to have a procedure or surgery, you can use Silagen as soon as the wound is fully closed. Results will start to appear between 3 and 7 weeks, and optimal results will be seen after 3 months of use.
