Kybella vs. Ultherapy for the Under-Chin Area

If the area under your chin is bothering you, you've probably come across two names: Kybella and Ultherapy. Both are non-surgical, both treat the under-chin area, and both are offered at Mint & Needle. But they're not interchangeable. They solve two different problems, and knowing which one you're dealing with is the key to getting the result you want.
The short version: Kybella treats fat. Ultherapy treats loose skin. Here's how each one works and how to tell which is right for you.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable for moderate to severe fullness caused by fat under the chin, often called a double chin. Its active ingredient is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a molecule your body already makes to break down dietary fat.
When Kybella is injected into the fat under your chin, it destroys fat cells, and your body clears them away over the following weeks. Once those cells are gone, they can no longer store fat. Most patients need more than one session, and you can have up to 6 treatments spaced at least one month apart.

What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a non-invasive skin-lifting treatment that uses microfocused ultrasound energy. It's FDA-cleared to lift the skin on the neck and under the chin, as well as the brow, and to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest.
Instead of targeting fat, Ultherapy delivers ultrasound energy to the deeper layers beneath the skin's surface. This kick-starts your body's natural repair process and stimulates new collagen, which gradually lifts and tightens loose skin from within. Nothing is injected and the skin's surface isn't broken.
At Mint & Needle, we offer Ultherapy PRIME, the newest version of the treatment. It lets your provider see the deeper layers of your skin on a screen in real time while treating, so the energy goes exactly where it's needed. Fat or loose skin? How to tell which you have
Most under-chin concerns come down to one of two things, or a mix of both.
It's probably fat if the area feels soft and full when you gently pinch it, you notice a "double chin" even when you hold your head up, or the fullness has been there for years, even at a healthy weight. Genetics play a big role here. That's Kybella territory.
It's probably loose skin if the skin looks crepey or droopy, your jawline has softened over time, or you notice more sagging when you look down. This often comes with age as collagen naturally declines. That's where Ultherapy shines.
It may be both if you have some fullness and some laxity. That's very common, and it's exactly why a consultation matters. Your provider will look at your chin, jawline and neck and recommend the treatment, or combination, that fits.
How they compare
Number of treatments. Kybella is usually a series. Most patients need more than one session, with up to 6 treatments spaced at least a month apart. Ultherapy is typically a single session that takes about 30 to 90 minutes, though some patients benefit from more than one, and yearly touch-ups can help maintain results.
Downtime. With Kybella, plan for swelling under the chin. It's usually mild to moderate and lasts about 11 days on average, along with possible bruising, tenderness or numbness. Ultherapy has no real downtime. You may notice some redness, slight swelling or tenderness afterward, but most people go right back to their normal routine.
When you'll see results. Kybella results build gradually over the weeks after each treatment, with the full effect after your final session. Ultherapy works on collagen, which takes time: lifting and tightening keep improving over two to three months, and some patients see gains for six months or more.
How long results last. Fat cells destroyed by Kybella can't store fat again, so results are long-lasting as long as your weight stays stable. Ultherapy results can last a year or longer, but because skin keeps aging, many patients choose maintenance treatments.
Can you combine Kybella and Ultherapy?
Often, yes. Because they work on different things, Kybella and Ultherapy can complement each other. Kybella reduces the fat underneath, and Ultherapy helps lift and tighten the skin around it, for a more sculpted jawline and profile.
This can be especially helpful if you're worried that removing fat might leave the skin looking a little loose. Your provider will decide whether a combination makes sense for you, which treatment to start with, and how to space them.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for a double chin, Kybella or Ultherapy? If your double chin is mainly fat, Kybella is designed for that. If it's mostly loose or sagging skin, Ultherapy is the better fit. Many people have a bit of both.
Does either treatment require surgery? No. Kybella is a series of small injections, and Ultherapy is non-invasive ultrasound, with no incisions for either.
Which one has less downtime? Ultherapy. Most people return to normal activities right away. With Kybella, expect swelling under the chin for about a week or two after each session.
Will Ultherapy get rid of fat? No. Ultherapy lifts and tightens skin by stimulating collagen. It isn't a fat-reduction treatment, which is why it's sometimes paired with Kybella.
How do I know which one I need? Book a consultation. Your provider will assess your chin and neck and build a plan around your goals.
